Santa Clarita native Katie Hill announced her decision to run for representative of the 25th district on Wednesday morning.

Congressman Steve Knight (R-Palmdale) currently represents the district.

Hill highlighted her campaign’s focus on family, education, jobs and healthcare by making her announcement on International Women’s Day.

“I’m running to represent this community, and I truly value the voices and stories that helped shape who I am today,” she said. “Growing up here, I came to the understanding that our country is great, but our political system is broken.”

As less than 20 percent of Congress is female, Hill told The Signal she hopes her candidacy shows other women they can also run for office.

As a candidate born and raised in the valley, Hill said she knows both the greatness and the trials of the area, giving her both knowledge of the city while maintaining a fresh perspective.

“It means making it possible for working parents to hold down a good job and still raise a successful family, and it means an economy that guarantees a prosperous and safe future for our kids,” Hill said in an announcement.

Hill said she believes her upbringing in Santa Clarita will help her be a strong representative for the middle class and relevant to both political parties.

“It has meant knowing what people care about and what they want to see done differently,” Hill said in a statement to The Signal. “Growing up here, I saw every day how you don’t have to be a Democrat or Republican to want to make our community better. I saw that people here could still work together, even if we didn’t always agree on every issue.”

Hill currently serves as the Executive Director and Deputy CEO of PATH, a non-profit organization that works to end homelessness. She also spoke on behalf of Measure H at The Signal’s public forum on the measure on Feb. 23.

She said her PATH experience has made her dedicated to the military and taught her to manage a lean budget. In her role at PATH, she worked alongside federal, state and local government officials, which she said will help her with the complexities of affecting change in office.

“I know how to provide essential services while being fiscally responsible, and I hope to do the same for the American taxpayers,” she said. “I have had to implement many large government programs through HUD, the VA, health departments and many more, giving me direct insight into the critical needs those programs meet as well as how they can be improved to be more efficient and effective.”
