Skaters can look forward to a brand new 6,500-square-foot skateboarding park at the Castaic Sports Complex at the end of 2018.

The approximated $1.3 million project is anticipated to begin construction in January of next year and will be completed that November and open soon after.

Given the size of the park, about 50 people will be able to comfortably skate at any time.

The park is a result of three meetings in 2015 where community members expressed a need and want for it, according to L.A. County Parks and Recreation Deputy Director Jonathan Gargan.

“Residents in the community made numerous requests to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to build a local skate park and the supervisors approved it,” Gargan said in a statement to The Signal. “This will be another great addition to the Castaic Sports Complex and it shows we take the needs of our communities seriously.”

In addition to the skate park itself, the site will also have new lighting, a covered seating area, a drinking fountain, a bike rack and walkways. A portion of the park will be covered with a fabric shade structure to protect from the sun, according to Parks and Recreation Public Information Officer Terry Kanakri.

The project will be funded with $900,000 of net Los Angeles County costs, $300,000 in county excess funds and $100,000 in specified excess funds made available from the L.A. County Safe Neighborhood Parks Proposition in 1996.

L.A. County Parks and Recreation is currently interviewing design build contractors for the project and anticipate selecting the contractor for the park in May, Kanakri said.
