Prosecutors are pursuing criminal charges against only one of six men arrested Thursday on unrelated weapons offenses.
On Monday, the six men arrested were expected to appear in San Fernando Superior Court for allegedly violating weapons laws.
They learned, however, that attorneys representing the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office would be pursuing just one of the half-dozen cases brought to them by deputies of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
The only case prosecutors are proceeding with involves one felony count of having a concealed firearm in a vehicle which was filed against a farm worker from Mendota, CA.
The suspect was described by deputies as farm worker was arrested on his 33rd birthday, about 1 p.m. Thursday.
Half of the weapons cases were dropped due to insufficient evidence, DA spokesman Ricardo Santiago told The Signal Tuesday.
Each of those abandoned cases involved the arrest of Sacramento men on suspicion of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
The pending criminal cases against three of the arrestees – a 39-year-old roofer, a 21-year-old warehouse worker and a male homemaker, age 25 – all from Sacramento, were all declined by prosecutors.
Of the remaining three cases, prosecutors said they received no details at all in another case of a man arrested by deputies carrying out a routine patrol of the “Park and Ride” area on Newhall Avenue at Sierra Highway at 1 a.m.
In that case, deputies checked out one particular car parked at the Park And Ride, Sheriff’s Spokeswoman Shirley Miller told The Signal last week.
“They saw a vehicle with two occupants,” she said. “Due to the time of night, they conducted a welfare check.”
A 31-year-old plumber from Canyon Country was arrested on suspicion of possessing a billy club and of being in possession of cocaine, she said.
Santiago said prosecutors have “nothing on him.”
Prosecutors kicked another case allegedly involving weapons and drugs back to sheriff’s deputies, asking for more information.
In that arrest, deputies pulled over a vehicle in the area of Sierra Highway and Soledad Canyon Road in Canyon Country Thursday after they determined it was in violation of “various vehicle codes,” Miller said last week.
They allegedly found two firearms inside the vehicle and some methamphetamine.
As a result, a 31-year-old welder from Canyon Country was arrested on suspicion of possessing an assault weapon and being in possession of methamphetamine.
“We have requested further investigation before making a filing decision,” Santiago said about the case.
