With new backpacks and big smiles, students in the Saugus Union School District headed back to school Wednesday.
The morning marked the first day of school for the district and for the Santa Clarita Valley.
“This is always an exciting time for us,” Superintendent Joan Lucid said in a statement. “The first day of school sets a fabulous tone for the rest of the school year. It allows the students to begin a routine that will lead them down a path of success while still giving them the comfort of ‘coming home.’”
Students in the elementary school district were excited to return to class, as they greeted friends and hugged teachers.
The day was also preceded by “Back to School Night,” held from Monday to Wednesday at all 15 schools, which allowed parents and students to get acquainted with the campus and teachers.
“We are eager to start the year,” President of the Governing Board David Powell said in a statement. “Our teachers, administrators, maintenance, facilities and technology staffs have been working so hard over the summer to make our campuses ready for a new school year. We can’t wait for the students to benefit from this hard work.”
