The city of Santa Clarita is inviting local businesses and employees to gear up for the 16th annual Bike to Work Day challenge on May 16.

The annual event is in observance of National Bike Month, which aims to encourage public and private employees statewide to join the “no-pollute commute by pledging to ride their bikes to work,” the city announced in a news release Thursday.

On Tuesday, the City Council is scheduled to formally designate May as Bicycle Month during its regular meeting.

The challenge is scheduled to be broken down into three categories: small businesses with two to 25 active employees, medium businesses with 26 to 100 active employees and large businesses with 100 or more active employees.

Participants who bike to work can fuel up with free refreshments, giveaways and cycling tips at six different pit stops:

·    City Hall, located at 23920 Valencia Blvd.

·    Bouquet Junction, located at the corner of Valencia Boulevard and Bouquet Canyon Road.

·    South Fork Trail access, located at the corner of Newhall Avenue and 16th Street.

·    Camp Plenty Road, just off Soledad Canyon Road.

·    City Public Works yard, located at 25663 Avenue Stanford.

·  Princess Cruises, located at 24303 Town Center Drive.

Interested businesses should designate a “lead rider,” who will act as a point of contact and be responsible for registering their business for the challenge, the news release read.

Participants will have the opportunity to be entered into a local raffle for prizes such as bicycles, high-quality cycling gear and movie tickets. Santa Clarita Transit and Metro will offer free local rides to anyone with a bike and/or helmet and the Pace Bike Share program will offer $2 off for any rider who uses the code “biketowork.”

Lead riders should register online at GreenSantaClarita.com and must submit a list of their company’s participating bicyclists by 1 p.m. on May 16 to city event coordinator Laura Jardine at 661-255-4376 or [email protected].For more information about Bike to Work Day, visit GreenSantaClarita.com.
