Mitchell Community Elementary School was placed under a self-initiated “soft lockdown” Thursday morning.

The temporary lockdown happened about 10:30 a.m. at Mitchell Community Elementary School on Goodvale Road, in Canyon Country.

“We’re good,” a receptionist at the school said shortly after 11:15 a.m., referring all comment to the school district’s superintendent,

“This was a self-imposed soft lockdown,” said Catherine Kawaguchi, superintendent of the Sulphur Springs Union School District.

Asked why the lockdown was called, Kawaguchi said: “Because of a disturbance in the neighborhood.”

A check with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station revealed deputies had been called to the Goodvale area for reports of a mentally ill person, said Shirley Miller, spokeswoman for the SCV Sheriff Station.

A “soft lockdown” requires students — in this case, kindergarten through 6th grade — to stay inside their classrooms.

More information will be released as it’s made available.
