Confirming an online announcement, a Big Lots! employee confirmed Wednesday the national retailer would be closing its Canyon Country location, but no closing date has been given yet.
Another employee, who was not authorized to speak on the record about the situation, said the sales really started last week after the announcement and they were expected to continue until the merchandise was gone.
The announcement comes in response to a Big Lots! SEC filing in June that mentioned the closure of 150 stores, but did not cite specifics for the locations.
The store’s website notes there are 109 locations in California, and just one in the Santa Clarita Valley.
Not all of the California locations are closing, and Big Lots has not published a list, but websites for stores that are closing have a bright orange banner that states “Closing this location” and announce sales of up to 20%.
The next-closest location, which is in Northridge, appears to be staying open based on its website. The Simi Valley location made the list of stores being shuttered.
The year-over-year net sales in the SEC filing stated Big Lots! sold $1.123 billion in merchandise during a 13-week period ending April 29, 2023, and sold $1.009 billion over a 13-week period ending in May 2024.
