Byron York’s immigration enforcement column, published Sept 11, ended with, “But Trump has the law on his side.” And, yes, based on a recent Supreme Court decision, that seems to be the case, but that just once again demonstrates we have bad law on the books.
I wanted to point out that throughout the history of the United States, there been many occasions where actions, policies and mandates were lawful, yet when we eventually came to our collective senses, we ultimately deemed heartless, immoral and sometimes, evil.
For example, and in no particular order:
• The plight and treatment of North American indigenous populations.
• Slavery.
• Women’s disenfranchisement.
• Racial segregation.
• World War II internment camps.
Lawfulness does not excuse immoral, wicked, unscrupulous actions; it just provides temporary authorization. Let us not forget that many hardworking human beings are being rounded up and harassed for nothing more than trying to live a better life and provide for themselves and their families.
