Homicide detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department are continuing their investigation into the death of Carrie Elizabeth Romney, sister-in-law to politician Mitt Romney — and the circumstances that led to her death remain unknown.

On Tuesday afternoon, Lt. Daniel Vizcarra, who is the lead investigator on the incident, told The Signal it is unknown whether Carrie Elizabeth intentionally jumped from the parking structure on Town Center Drive or accidentally fell from it. The circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation and no additional details were released.

At approximately 9 p.m. Friday, detectives with the LASD Homicide Bureau responded to the 24000 block of Valencia Town Center Drive in relation to a death investigation, according to an LASD news release.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner identified the deceased person as the 64-year-old sister-in-law to Mitt Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, U.S. senator representing Utah and 2012 Republican presidential nominee.

She was found near a parking structure on Town Center Drive and was a resident of Valencia, according to the news release.

The cause of death remains listed as “deferred” under the L.A. County Medical Examiner’s Office website as of Tuesday afternoon.

“Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives,” Mitt Romney told People in a statement following Carrie Elizabeth’s death.
