Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials said Friday afternoon that a report of a handgun found earlier in the day ended up being a BB gun.

The initial call to the Sheriff’s Station involved a person who said they saw a handgun lying in the street in Newhall.

Shirley Miller, a spokeswoman with the SCV Sheriff’s Station, confirmed the initial call over the radio traffic was for “someone who … found a firearm and notified sheriff’s deputies.”

Miller followed up Friday afternoon after speaking with the deputies who responded to say the “found firearm” was not a real firearm, but rather a toy BB gun.

The weapon was found in a neighborhood not far from where a shooting occurred earlier in the week, according to incident reports.

Deputies received the report sometime after 11 a.m., but the scene had cleared by about noon, according to witnesses.

There weas no information available as of this story’s publication as to whether the weapon is believed to be related to a shooting on the 22200 block of Park Street on Tuesday night.

A fight reportedly broke out at around 8:26 p.m. at the nearby Creekview Park after a man brandished a firearm, according to radio dispatch traffic Tuesday.

Watch Sgt. Josh Nemeth told reporters that the station received a call from Fourth and Pine streets, where juveniles were fighting and a weapon was involved.

Deputies said a 911 call was received from a person who said they were shot but refused to provide any additional information. The victim was in critical condition but stable on Thursday, according to officials.

SCV Sheriff’s Station officials were unable to confirm Friday whether the incidents were related or whether the gun matched the caliber of the weapon believed to be used in the shooting.

No arrests were announced Friday in connection with the discovery.

Anyone with information about the incident can call the station at 661-260-4000.
