A white SUV hydroplaned on Interstate 5 northbound of Magic Mountain Parkway and hit a big rig’s saddle tank causing it to leak its diesel onto the freeway on Sunday morning, according to an official with the California Highway Patrol Newhall-area Office.
All lanes are open as of 2:25 p.m., according to Officer Carlos Burgos-Lopez, public information officer with the CHP.
The initial call came in at 9:59 a.m. after the white SUV hit a big rig and vehicles in the slow lane, Burgos-Lopez said.
Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel were also called to the scene and contacted its Health Hazardous Materials Division, according to Capt. Brian Kight with the Fire Department.
CHP officers contacted the California Department of Transportation for a hard closure of the freeway, Burgos-Lopez said.
The No. 1 lane is open, but No. 2, 3, 4 lanes are closed as of 11:02 a.m., Burgos-Lopez said.
Burgos-Lopez added that no storm drains were affected by the Hazmat.
Kight said that the tank was a 35-gallon diesel tank and Hazmat is doing clean up at the scene at the time of this publication.
The big rig stopped leaking around 10:53 a.m., Kight said.
There are no transports reported, Kight said.
There is no additional information at the time of this publication, Burgos-Lopez said.
