The cause of the gas pipe rupture is still under investigation after the pipe broke off and released debris, dirt and gases in Castaic on Saturday evening, according to a news release posted Monday on the Southern California Gas Co.’s website.
SoCal Gas representatives were unavailable to comment at the time of this publication.
Aerial photos show an apparent landslide or mudslide in the area of the rupture. While no official determination of cause has been made, a statement from SoCalGas indicated that land shifting due to a landslide or mudslide is believed to be the most likely cause.
When asked if he knew the cause of the rupture, Capt. Brian Kight with the L.A. County Fire Department declined to comment due to not having any information regarding the cause and deferred comment to the SoCal Gas news release.
The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station is no longer involved in the investigation, according to officials with the station.
Deputies were first called to Pine Crest Place and Ridge Route Road on Saturday to assist SoCal Gas personnel by implementing road closures and helping resources pass through, according to Sgt. Nelson Rios with the station.
But as of Monday, deputies are no longer involved in the investigation, Rios said in a phone interview.
