Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger this week honored renowned seismologist and public safety advocate Lucy Jones as the 5th District’s Woman of the Year during the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors’ 40th Annual Women of the Year Luncheon at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, Barger’s office announced in a news release.
The annual event recognizes outstanding women from across Los Angeles County whose leadership and service strengthen their communities, the release said. Each member of the Board of Supervisors selects an honoree who exemplifies dedication, impact and public leadership.
Jones, a visiting associate at the California Institute of Technology and one of the world’s most recognized earthquake scientists, was recognized for her decades-long career advancing earthquake research and helping communities better prepare for natural disasters.
“For decades, Dr. Lucy Jones has been a trusted voice helping Californians understand and prepare for natural disasters,” Barger, whose district includes the Santa Clarita Valley, said in the release. “Her ability to translate complex science into clear guidance has empowered millions of people to take preparedness seriously. Because of her leadership, our communities are stronger, safer and better equipped to face the challenges ahead.”
Reflecting on the honor, Jones said, according to the release, “I appreciate being recognized in this way. My work has focused on helping people understand the risks we face and take practical steps to protect themselves and their communities. Being honored today reminds us all that preparedness is a shared responsibility and that together, we can make a real difference.”
Jones spent 33 years with the U.S. Geological Survey, where she helped shape national natural hazard research and public risk communication. She also helped develop the methodology used for earthquake advisories in California and has authored more than 100 scientific papers, along with the book “The Big Ones: How Natural Disasters Have Shaped Us (And What We Can Do About Them).”
Beyond her scientific work, Jones has been a leading voice in public preparedness efforts, including promoting the annual Great ShakeOut earthquake drill, which encourages millions of people worldwide to practice life-saving safety actions, the release said.
