After four years overseeing the Saugus girls’ basketball program, Anthony Falasca has stepped down as the head coach of the Centurions.

In a statement announced on social media, Falasca announced his decision and cited his reasons as including a desire to “spend [time] with my family and further my professional career.”

“I want to thank all the players I have coached over the years for making my coaching journey so special. I couldn’t have asked for a more incredible season and will miss every aspect of coaching at Saugus High School,” according to a statement posted on social media from Falasca. “I will be taking an unknown duration of time away from coaching to spend time with my family and further my professional career.”

In an interview with The Signal, Falasca added that he stepped down to spend more time with his family as the last few years of being a head coach has been a lot to manage.

“I’ve always put everybody else kind of before me, and I’m going to be a little selfish and put me and my family first,” Falasca said. “I think everyone understands the sacrifices that I put over these last 25-plus years, but more so in these past four or five years to build the program to have a lasting impression at Saugus.”

Falasca also added that he was careful with his words when he announced his decision to step down as the head coach and not use the word like “retirement.”

“I didn’t use the word like ‘retire’ on purpose because I don’t think this is the last time that I’ll be on the sidelines,” he said. “Whether that’s one year or four years, I don’t know but I think it’s time to take a step back.”

This past season, Falasca led the Saugus girls’ basketball team to a historic season as the Centurions won the most-ever games in program history with 27. And in the playoffs, the Centurions played in their first-ever California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section championship game in a loss to Crescenta Valley.

Despite the loss, the Centurions’ season continued in the state playoffs where the team won three games and ended the season as SoCal regional finalist following a loss to St. Joseph of Santa Maria.

Falasca concluded that it was a tough decision to make but the right one, and added he’s going to miss the players he’s got to coach and believes he’s going to take the lessons he learned into whatever he does next.

“I started coaching in 2000 at Hart High School as an assistant frosh coach, to the head coach of Saugus girls’ basketball in 2026. There’s been a lot of players and people that I’ve hoped to teach the game and life lessons, too,” he said. “And more importantly, the things that parents and admin taught me, that I didn’t know I needed to learn. I think I’m going to take that into my personal life and then into my career. Those are lessons that I will cherish forever.”
