News release

Three boxers from Santa Clarita’s Guerrero Boxing Gym stepped into the ring at the Wallis Annenberg Youth Center in Whittier on April 4, competing against a strong lineup from Century Sheriffs Boxing Gym — and earned some big wins as they set their eyes on the upcoming Junior Olympics.

“Led by retired professional boxer and coach Fernando Guerrero, the team represented Santa Clarita with discipline, preparation and heart,” said a news release from the gym.

The young athletes were also introduced to L.A. County Sheriff Robert Luna, who took time to speak with the fighters and encourage them to continue working hard and pursuing their dreams. His presence made a lasting impression on the athletes as they prepared for competition, the release said.

Two standout performances came from 14-year-old Drakeston “Drake” Espinoza and 17-year-old Robert Lopez, both of whom earned impressive victories and took home championship belts, the release said.

For Espinoza and Lopez, the wins carried extra meaning, the release said. “After a challenging stretch of recent competitions that did not go their way, both fighters demonstrated resilience, growth and a true warrior spirit. Their victories reflected months of hard work, commitment and perseverance inside the gym.”

Fifteen-year-old Michael — who was identified only by his first name in the gym’s release — also delivered a strong performance, showcasing skill, toughness and determination against a capable opponent.

“In a decision that reflects the gym’s commitment to athlete safety above all else, coach Fernando Guerrero made the call to stop the bout early,” the release said. “Despite the outcome, Michael’s effort and courage in the ring earned respect from coaches, teammates and spectators alike.”

With the Whittier competition behind them, the boxers’ focus shifts to the upcoming Southern California Junior Olympic Boxing Tournament, scheduled to be hosted April 16-19 by USA Boxing Local Boxing Committee 33 at Foisia Park in Carson.

The event represents a major opportunity for these young athletes to continue building their rankings and experience on a larger stage, the release said.

Until then, their preparations continue, including an event that will bring 12-year-old boxer Roman Peña, along with coach Guerrero, to Bakersfield on Sunday, April 12. The release added that a victory would make for a memorable milestone, as Peña celebrates his 13th birthday the following day.
