A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge granted a mental health diversion to a parent accused of a physical confrontation with his child — over the objection of the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office, according to the minute order for Department 2 in the Santa Clarita Courthouse.

The case against the 53-year-old Saugus man involved two charges after a verbal confrontation led to a physical fight between the man and his teenage child. The incident resulted in minor injuries, according to court records.

The minute order indicated the prosecution would object to any early termination of diversion.

Judge Faye Barnouw called the matter, which included a written motion for mental health diversion, which Barnouw granted for the defendant. Court records included progress reports for the defendant’s counseling sessions.

Both misdemeanor counts were placed on diversion for the next 12 months, on the condition the defendant completed a yearlong anger-management program and a domestic-violence treatment program, as well as 30 hours of community service.

The father is required to bring updates to his future court hearings.
