Leftism is a religion for secularists, and that makes perfect sense. Humans need something noble and bigger than themselves to believe in, to tell them who they are, and to make the world a better place. And when your entire economic theory has failed everywhere it has ever been tried, you have to treat it as a religion, because treating it as a math problem is just too depressing.
