Plus, scores from around the Foothill League in flag football

With the end of the flag football season around the corner, Castaic head coach William Jones has urged his team to approach every remaining game like it’s their Super Bowl as the Coyotes eye their first-ever Foothill League title.

Following a 38-6 road win over the Canyon Cowboys on Tuesday, the Coyotes are one step closer to their season-long goal behind Hailey Hornberger’s five-touchdown performance.

“This was a total team effort. That’s a well-coached team,” Jones said afterward. “For the girls to come out with the gravity of what we’re trying to accomplish … all I can say is that I’m proud of them.”

Hornberger tossed for five touchdowns in the win and has been one of the key players for Castaic after the junior became eligible to play after a post-transfer sit-out period.

“Obviously, she’s a gifted thrower of the ball, but she’s also a gifted runner,” Jones said of Hornberger. “She’s a dual threat, and she started to find her stride and she’s starting to get the chemistry with the offense.”

With the win, the Coyotes improved to a 7-1 Foothill League record and remained in first place in the standings with four games left in their league schedule.

“Every game is our Super Bowl because in this type of league – with how close it is – we’re going to get everyone’s best,” Jones said. “This is everyone’s else’s Super Bowl so we have to take it one step at a time and just know we have to finish the job.”

The Coyotes will look to extend the winning momentum with a home matchup 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Castaic High School against the Valencia Vikings.

As for Canyon, the loss dropped the Cowboys to 3-6 in Foothill League play and sixth in the standings.

The Cowboys will look to bounce back on Tuesday at Canyon High School against the Golden Valley Grizzlies at 3:30 p.m.
