Following a narrow home win over the Hart Hawks in the team’s last Foothill League contest, the Valencia Vikings followed up their hot start with a road win over the Saugus Centurions, 15-3, and began the league season 2-0.
In the win for Valencia (5-2, 2-0), the Vikings swept the first and third rounds in singles play as Saugus’ (2-2, 0-1) Jinessa Mangarin secured the 6-3 win over Valencia’s Scarlette Roofner.
Valencia’s Jean Kim displayed a strong performance, sweeping her three rounds in singles play, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles play, the Vikings’ pairings kept up the momentum from the singles’ side as Valencia ended doubles play with a 7-2 record.
Saugus’ Layla Sherzada and Lily Mungia secured their win in the first round with Centurions’ Makella Anderson and Cassie Neal taking their respective victory in the second round.
With the win, the Vikings improved to 5-2 overall. The Vikings will look to keep up their winning momentum with a matchup against the visiting Castaic Coyotes Thursday with the first serve set for 3 p.m. at Valencia High School.
As for Saugus, the loss dropped the Centurions’ opening Foothill League match and they will look to rebound Thursday at Saugus High School against the West Ranch Wildcats at 3 p.m.
After Tuesday’s matches, here are scores from around the Foothill League:
West Ranch 17, Canyon 1: After a Foothill League winning season last year, the West Ranch Wildcats (2-1, 2-0) started the Foothill League season 2-0 following back-to-back wins, including a 17-1 victory over the Canyon Cowboys (6-3, 0-1) on Tuesday.
With the win, the Wildcats began Foothill League play 2-0 and will look to build upon their momentum with a road contest Thursday at Saugus High School in a matchup with the Centurions at 3 p.m.
The Cowboys opened Foothill League play with a loss and started the season 0-1 in league play. They will look to bounce back on Tuesday at Canyon High School against the visiting Golden Valley Grizzlies with first serve set for 3 p.m.
Golden Valley 13, Castaic 5: After a loss to West Ranch to open Foothill League play, the Golden Valley Grizzlies (4-1, 1-1) bounced back with a road win over the Castaic (6-2, 0-1).
With the win, the Grizzlies are at .500 in Foothill League play and now turn their attention toward Thursday’s contest at Golden Valley High School against the Hart Hawks with first serve set for 3 p.m.
As for Castaic, the loss dropped the Coyotes to 0-1 to begin Foothill League play and they will look to bounce back at Valencia High School Thursday against the Vikings with the first serve scheduled for 3 p.m.
