Jack Teoli (letters, July 22) says that the Democratic Party is not being taken over by socialists, and yet it is. Any time “The State” takes your money to provide a social program or service, that’s socialism. So please have the courage to call a spade a spade. Don’t be shy about it. There’s no shame in being poor or needy … that or zealously compassionate. The State is working hard to make sure that the poor don’t starve to death. Now THAT would be a shame in a country as wealthy as ours. Actually, that would qualify as a paradox. What I’d like to know is how these things even happen … people dying of starvation at a buffet.
