Re: Lois Eisenberg, letters, Oct. 20.
Dear Lois: Thank you for the comments honoring Lady Liberty. She means just as much to many of us on the conservative side, maybe even more. My grandparents and great grandparents also immigrated to the United States along with your ancestors. The difference is they came for opportunity, not handouts. Immigration policies still in effect require a sponsor that will house and feed immigrants until they can take care of themselves; or a letter stating that the person has a job so they can take care of themselves.
The idea is to allow the “huddled masses” to have opportunity and not be a burden to the government or taxpayers. The strength of our country is in people making their dream happen; not in giveaway programs allowing a lifestyle of government-controlled lives. Our beacon is fading. Soon we will be like every other country on the planet and there will be nowhere for us or anyone else to go. Pay attention to history and educate yourself on all points of view.
