Senior center creative writing class promotes bonding and individuality

Every Monday, Teri Crane hosts a creative writing class at the senior center. During the class, Crane, who took over teaching the class five years ago after she retired and wanted to use her master’s degree in writing, teaches a lesson about the craft of writing then suggests a topic and has the group write for about 20 minutes.

SCV Senior Center to send off 2019 in style

On Dec. 23, the senior center is scheduled to host the Innovation Show Choir for a lunchtime performance. Children aged 8 to 18 will put on a special performance of holiday music favorites with accompanying choreography. Then on Dec. 31, the senior center will host a lunchtime Roaring ’20s-themed New Year’s Eve party. Guests donning their fedoras, flapper headbands and best 1920s attire will be treated to a video about the 1920s, live music, a Charleston dance lesson, a noon ball drop and a sparkling cider toast, since the ’20s were the era of Prohibition, after all.

Senior Center thanks volunteers with holiday party

On Tuesday afternoon, SCV Senior Center welcomed about 200 of its volunteers to a holiday part to thank them for their efforts to make the senior community more comfortable. Though the senior center has hosted many thank you parties for its volunteers, this year had the distinction of being the first one at the new facility.

Valencia Christian Center to host first Jazz & Comedy Concert

On Dec. 15, the Valencia Christian Center (VCC) will host their first Jazz & Comedy Concert Experience at the senior center. The night will open with performances of jazz gospel music performed by a variety of artists including violinist Karen Briggs, drummer Laval Belle and pianist Myron McKinley, who also works as the musical director for Earth Wind & Fire. The second half of the night will be devoted to a comedy show by Broderick E. Rice, who will also emcee the evening.

Home Instead organizes secret Santa for seniors

Home Instead is running its “Be a Santa to a Senior” program for the 15th year. Partnering with businesses in Santa Clarita and Antelope Valley, Home Instead has set up trees filled with with paper ornaments with the names of seniors and items that they need or would like to receive for Christmas.
