A sighting of a man who was possibly armed spurred a lockdown and search in a Newhall neighborhood Saturday afternoon.

A call came into the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station shortly after 12:30 p.m. for a person with a gun near the 24000 block of Pine Street, according to Lt. Bryan Aguilera.

Sheriff’s deputies set up a containment around an apartment building near the corner of 6th Street and Pine Street, focusing most of their efforts on a parking garage.

Two deputies taking cover behind a parked car made their way into a patrol car and began making verbal calls over loudspeakers shortly after 1:15 p.m.

“This is the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department,” an amplified voice announced.

“The building is surrounded.”

Residents watched from the front porches of homes along Pine Street as armed deputies taking cover behind pillars and various cars advanced toward the building.

“Victor, put the gun down, walk out the front door of the building, down the steps toward Pine Street,” the deputy said over the patrol car’s loudspeaker.

At one point, the person of interest attempted to get out of the parking structure without being detected, Aguilera said.

Fire and paramedic crews arrived a few minutes before 1:30 p.m. and staged about a block away from the scene.

The suspect was detained at 1:34 p.m. without incident. As of 2:09 p.m., deputies were searching the scene for a firearm, Aguilera said.
