This week, The Master’s University’s men’s and women’s basketball programs will look to continue their hot starts as both teams are slated to compete in a number of non-conference games…

Women’s basketball

Last week, The Master’s University women’s basketball team improved its 2016-17 record to 4-1 after posting impressive wins against Cal Lutheran and the University of Southwest.

Nov. 22: TMU 74, CLU 66

Last Tuesday, Bianca Cubello tallied her second double-double of the season as the senior forward posted an evening-high 23 points and 11 rebounds in TMU’s 74-66 win over NCAA Division 3 Cal Lutheran.

TMU led for the majority of the first quarter until the Regals tied things at 18-18 at the 2:29 mark. With a 1:15 left in the first quarter, TMU’s Sabrina Thompson tied the score (21-21) for the final time of the afternoon by draining a free-throw.

Cubello opened the second quarter with a layup 12 seconds into play, giving the Mustangs a 23-21 advantage. TMU led Cal Lutheran for the entirety of the second quarter.

The Mustangs continued their dominant performance throughout the second half by maintaining a lead that reached as high as 12 points.

TMU outscored the Regals 20-19 in the third quarter and 13-11 in the fourth quarter, laying the foundation for the 74-66 victory.

Two other Mustangs joined Cubello in scoring double digits as Hannah Ostrom scored 16 points and Ashley Bartow scored 11. Cubello also led TMU with five assists and three blocks while Ostrom earned four steals.

Friday: TMU 59, Lewis-Clark State 78

Last Friday, TMU was handed its first loss of the season as Lewis-Clark State College beat the Mustangs 78-59 on Bross Court.

Despite an afternoon where TMU trailed the Warriors by double digits for the majority of the game, the Mustangs’ efforts were highlighted by Hannah Forrar’s team-leading 12 points. Cubello scored eight points, yanked down seven rebounds and posted two blocks, while Thompson tallied four assists.

Saturday: TMU: 95 , University of the Southwest: 55

Cubello paced six Mustangs in double figures, and Bartow just missed a double-double as TMU used the middle quarters to blast past the University of the Southwest 95-55 last Saturday afternoon on TMU’s Bross Court.

A day after scoring a season-low 59 points, the NAIA 14th-ranked Mustangs posted a season-high as they improved to 4-1.

Cubello, the club’s leading scorer (16.4 points per game), posted a game-high 18 points, going 6-of-11 from the field and 6-of-6 from the free-throw line while taking down six rebounds. TMU’s Jamilee Iddings went 4-of-5 from behind the arc en route to 16 points, and Brooke Bailey nailed three more treys on the way to 14 points in her second collegiate game. Megan Lindsley chipped in with 11 points, while Ostrom and Bartow, who also pulled down eight rebounds, contributed 10 points apiece.

Following a couple of days off, the Mustangs will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Riverside to take on La Sierra University. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. On Friday, TMU will host Northern New Mexico on the campus of the College of the Canyons for a 5 p.m. game

On Tuesday, TMU will travel to San Dimas for a 7 p.m. game against Life Pacific College. Then, on Friday, TMU will host Cal Maritime on the campus of the College of the Canyons for a 7 p.m. game.
