Whether it’s Baseball America, USA Today or, most recently, MaxPreps, Stevenson Ranch resident Hunter Greene says the pre-draft props don’t get old.

“I’m honored,” Greene, a senior pitcher/shortstop at Notre Dame High of Sherman Oaks, told The Signal on Wednesday via Twitter. “… It’s always nice to see MaxPreps take the time to recognize all the players, and I’m thankful for them.”

MaxPreps, the aforementioned high school sports website, placed Greene No. 1 this week on its list of the Top 10 high school Major League Baseball Draft prospects for 2017.

MaxPreps reporter Kevin Askeland wrote that Greene is “the closest thing to a consensus No. 1 pick among the preps.”

“An All-American candidate since his sophomore year, Greene added power to his resume last year with five home runs,” Askeland continued. “It’s quite possible, however, that Greene will be chosen as a pitcher.”

Greene, who has reportedly touched 98 to 100 mph off the mound, said he was glad to share the MaxPreps honor with friends Jordon Adell (No. 2 on the list, from Louisville, Kentucky), Royce Lewis (No. 3, from JSerra Catholic of San Juan Capistrano) and Hagen Danner (No. 9, from Huntington Beach), among others.

“Those are really good guys and are very special friends of mine,” Greene said.

Greene, who signed to play at UCLA, is MLBPipeline’s No. 1 draft prospect.

He is Baseball America’s No. 1 high school prospect, and he was recently featured in a USA Today article that said Greene “represents Major League Baseball’s potential star role model in its battle to reverse the industry’s scarcity of African-American players.”

The story was written leading up to MLB’s inaugural Dream Series on Jan. 12-16 in Tempe, Arizona, an event that provided “exposure to about 65 minority pitchers and catchers.”

“I love pitching,” Greene told USA TODAY Sports, “but there’s so few African-American pitchers I see out there. As far as catching, maybe there’s only one or two African Americans I’ve ever seen, and none in our league.

“Maybe there just hasn’t been as many opportunities, I don’t know, but hopefully that can change.”

Greene’s presence brought extra buzz to the event, according to Baseball America.

Clearly there is plenty more buzz to follow.

The 2017 MLB Draft is set for June 12-14. The Minnesota Twins hold the No. 1 overall selection. The Reds hold the second pick, with the Padres third.
