Saugus High football’s Daniel Gilmartin hasn’t set foot on the Air Force Academy campus yet, but he knows he wants to be there. And play football there.

“It’s awesome,” Gilmartin said. “I can’t ask for anything more. I didn’t really expect this coming out of the season at all.

“I just expected to go somewhere for college and maybe play football. I didn’t expect to get something so prestigious.”

The tight end verbally committed to play for the Falcons on Tuesday. He received a phone call from assistant backfield coach Jake Campbell, offering him a spot on the team. Gilmartin made his decision to accept that night.

“I had some other options,” the senior said, “but why wouldn’t I take a free education and D1 football?”

In his senior year with the Centurions, Gilmartin made 38 catches for 517 yards. He was also named an All-CIF receiver and All-Foothill League first-teamer.

He made 39 total tackles as a linebacker on defense with four sacks and a fumble recovery.

Gilmartin sent film to Air Force, which is located north of Colorado Springs, Colorado, earlier this year. The program contacted Saugus football and had a meeting with Gilmartin about two months ago.

Along with playing football, Gilmartin will go to school for four years, then serve in the Air Force for five.

“It’s a good opportunity because it’ll set me up for life,” he said. “It’s a great school to go to, and I can see the country so that’s good. I don’t know how to put it, but it’s a good thing to do.”
