Between the first and second games of College of the Canyons softball’s Tuesday conference double-header at COC, coach John Wissmath wasted no time with his team.

“We went straight into our workout,” Wissmath said. “We had five minutes, I talked to them for a little bit and we came out here and played catch and got ready for the game.”

The goal was to transfer the energy built up toward the end of the Cougars’ 11-6 win in the first game against LA Valley and carry it into the second.

It worked. COC won the latter game 14-0 in five innings.

In Game 1, Canyons scored two runs in the second and third innings to build a 4-0 lead, but the Monarchs scored three of their own in the fourth to bring the deficit to one.

LA Valley (0-24 overall, 0-10 in Western State Conference, East) scored twice more in the top of the fifth inning to take the lead. But home runs from Azmarheen Anderson and Danielle Chatman, followed by an RBI single from Bailey Bodkin added three runs to push COC out in front for good.

COC (28-6-1, 9-2) put up four runs in the sixth inning to seal the game.

“We came out a little flat in the beginning,” said COC pitcher Sarah Wilson. “We picked it up, though, which was good. Our bats were a little flat in the beginning, but we came out with two nice home runs.”

While the first inning of Game 2 was silent, the second was loud. Eight runs, which included a grand slam from Chatman, gave the Cougars breathing room.

“I felt good,” Chatman said of her swing. “I felt like I really helped my team toward the beginning and it kind of started the spark for us to get going.”

Canyons scored four runs in the third inning, then two more in the fourth, capped by Chatman’s third homer of the day.

Wilson had a complete-game four-hitter. She struck out five.

“You can just see her determination when she steps onto the field,” Wissmath said. “And that’s what we need as a team. The girls follow that.”

Chatman finished the day 5-for-6 with 10 RBIs. Sienna Vannoy was 3-for-5 with four RBIs.

The Cougars are now on a four-game conference win streak.

“Just keep pushing one game at a time,” Wilson said.
