UPDATE: Two men seriously hurt in head-on crash on San Francisquito

Two men were reported to be seriously injured in a head-on crash on San Francisquito Canyon Road Wednesday, after one of the men allegedly passed six “slow” vehicles at 80 miles an hour, according to investigators with the California Highway Patrol.

But, both men were later reported to be in fair condition at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, Patrick Moody, hospital spokesman told The Signal shortly after noon Thursday.

About 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, 28-year-old Carlos D. Ballardo, of Lancaster, was traveling northbound in the northbound lane of San Francisquito Canyon Road at about 80 miles an hour as he approached a westerly blind curve in the roadway, according to news release issued by CHP Officer Josh Greengard.

A second motorist, Brian R. Zimmerman, 37, of Green Valley, in a 2013 Hyundai Elanta, was traveling southbound in the southbound lane on San Francisquito Canyon Road near the same location at approximately 50 miles an hour.

Ballardo “moved his 2007 Chevy Cobalt, from the northbound lane into the southbound lane across double solid yellow lines in order to pass slower traffic traveling northbound,” the CHP report said.

Witnesses told CHP that Ballardo passed about five to six vehicles “at an extremely high rate of speed and in a reckless manner in the southbound lane as he entered the blind curve in the roadway,” according to the CHP report.

The two vehicles collided head on in the southbound lane.

Emergency response crews including the CHP and firefighters with the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded.

Traffic On San Francisquito Canyon Road was reduced to one lane for approximately two hours while the on-scene investigation was conducted.
