Deputies assigned to specialized patrol teams took a bike ride Tuesday through the backyards of Santa Clarita Valley homes, along bike trails and paseos, only to find meth, cocaine, gang activity netting four arrests.
Pedaling deputies creating a “proactive presence” by patrolling SCV’s many designated pathways made the arrests in the course of simply trying to deter crime, Shirley Miller, spokeswoman for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, wrote in a report posted on the station’s social media.
“The deputies arrested at least four individuals for various offenses including possession of methamphetamine, cocaine, and one individual had a warrant in the system for heroin,” she wrote in her post Wednesday.
“Deputies also cited an individual who was drinking alcohol in a Newhall park. They had contact with some gang members and other suspicious persons,” Miller reported.
Notes are made of the individuals that they have contact with during their patrol, regardless whether the individual is arrested or not, she said.
Deputies on bike patrol were members of either were members of two specialized teams – the Crime Impact Team (CIT) and the Special Assignment Team (SAT).
CIT members work closely with detectives investigating robberies and burglaries whereas SAT members work closely with detectives assigned to the station’s Career Offender Burglary/Robbery Apprehension – COBRA team.
“The deputies rode down residential streets, across business parking lots, down sidewalks, and through paseos,” Miller wrote in her post.
“The teams were monitoring neighborhoods for anything from gang related activity to suspicious persons.
“Riding bikes make it easier for the specialized teams to go into areas undetected and catch unlawful activity in the act.”
