A local couple, described by deputies as unemployed transients, were arrested after a brief struggle with store security for allegedly stealing raw shrimp and beer.

Deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station on Tuesday evening arrested a 23-year-old woman from Newhall and a 28-year-old man from Canyon Country on suspicion of robbery, a felony.

They were taken into custody with bail set at $50,000.

“On Tuesday, around 5 p.m., deputies responded to a business located on the 26400 block of Carl Boyer Drive in Canyon Country regarding a robbery call,” Shirley Miller, spokeswoman for the SCV Sheriff’s Station told The Signal Wednesday.

“Two transients entered the location and selected items including raw shrimp, produce, beer and cellphone chargers,” she said. “They allegedly concealed the items and walked past cash registers without paying for the items… Loss prevention officers made contact with the couple and a  brief struggle ensued. The suspects ran through the parking lot and out of view.”

“Patrol deputies checked the surrounding area, and located individuals matching the suspects’ description in the Golden Triangle Road and Isabella Parkway area,” she said.

Both suspects were scheduled to appear at the Santa Clarita Courthouse on Wednesday.
