The Sulphur Springs Union School District elected Ken Chase as its new president and Denis DeFigueiredo as its new clerk during its organizational governing board meeting Wednesday.

This is the first time Chase, elected in December 2013, will serve as the president of the SSUSD Governing Board.  He served as the board’s clerk this past year and as the board’s presiding officer two years prior.

“I’m excited to be president of the board of a great district,” Chase said.  “I appreciate my fellow board members and hope to continue to do what’s best for the district.”

As board president, Chase said he hopes to continue his focus on the Sulphur Springs District’s accounting practices to form a fiscally strong budget.

“I think the district is doing a great job,” he said.  “My focus, with my accounting background, is to continue to ensure that the district is financially strong.  We have seen great improvement under the past three to four years with the board and under the leadership of Dr. Kawaguchi and I’d like to see that continue.”

He also is looking forward to the district’s new textbook adoption and implementation of the California Next Generation Science Standards.

In addition to his position as trustee for Area 4, Chase is a certified management accountant who works as the corporate controller for Park Group, LLC in Pasadena.

Before joining the Governing Board, Chase was active in the Sulphur Springs District where he served on School Site Councils, committees and as chairperson of the Measure CK Bond Oversight Committee.

In addition to his position as trustee for Area 2, DeFigueiredo has served on School Site council at Mitchell Community School and at Sierra Vista Junior High School, in addition to committees in the William S. Hart Union High School District.

He is also involved in youth sports, music and scouting where he received an Honorary Service Award from the PTA and an Award of Merit from the Boy Scouts of America.

While he is not acting as a board member, DeFigueiredo works as an independent information technology professional.

DeFigueiredo and his family have been residents of Canyon Country since 1991.  During this time, his three children attended Mitchell Elementary School in the Sulphur Springs District.
