Various schools in the William S. Hart Union High School District have agreed to participate in the new Give a Turkey program as they attempt to support Santa Clarita Valley families who are in need this holiday season.

“This Canyon Country community event is supported by Canyon, Golden Valley, Sierra Vista, and La Mesa,” Canyon High School Assistant Principal Zaid Bakoo said in an email. The event will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Golden Valley High School, which is located at 27051 Robert C. Lee Parkway in Santa Clarita.

“Give a Turkey is a new program beginning this year (that’s) meant to support Santa Clarita families that are in need this holiday season,” Bakoo said.

Donations of non-perishable food items will also be accepted. A list of needed items can be found online at bit.ly/2Rp0vmr.

The goal is to collect 150 turkeys, but organizers are hoping to collect a lot more, according to the website. Hopeful participants can also volunteer to deliver or package the meals using the website, as well.

“The turkey donation, plus the non-perishable food drive (will) hopefully give a family in need a great Thanksgiving meal,” Bakoo added.
