Firefighters respond to blaze in Newhall, possible arsonist sought

Firefighters quickly doused a brush fire in Newhall Friday afternoon as law enforcement officials searched for a possible arsonist in connection to the incident. 

Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel worked to extinguish a quarter-acre blaze in the wash near Railroad Avenue and 15th Street at around 3:30 p.m., according to Fire Department spokesman Franklin Lopez. 

By 3:37 p.m., firefighters called forward progress stopped at 2 acres with no structures threatened, fire officials confirmed.

Sheriff’s officials said that after receiving reports from several witnesses, the incident was being investigated as possible arson. 

“We have a small brush fire of approximately 2 acres, and we do have multiple witnesses that say a female Hispanic is an arson suspect,” said Lt. Ethan Marquez with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. 

Deputies remained on the scene at 4 p.m. to conduct an investigation and search for a possible suspect, Marquez added.
