News release

The Bella Vida Senior Center on Golden Valley Road will provide the site for the Santa Clarita Valley Rotary Club’s second annual Veterans Outreach Program, which will package 10,000 instant breakfasts for homeless and needy veterans in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The event is scheduled to take place on Thursday, Oct. 26, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Rotarians will be joined by members of the Optimists, Kiwanis, SCV Rotary Sunrise Club, and local veterans groups.

The Rotary International project was first established in 2004 to alleviate the food shortages in drought-ravaged Tanzania. SCV Rotary was introduced to the program in 2021 at the Rotary District 5280 Conference in Lake Arrowhead. Then-President Diane Kenney and her Rotary board of directors initiated the project during her 2022-23 term.

Current Rotary President Scott Hoolahan invited the Kiwanis, Optimists and Sunrise Clubs to share in this year’s project. The clubs were so impressed with the idea that they not only agreed to participate in the packaging but also share in the cost of the food as well, making it a valley-wide project.

The preparation includes a four-step procedure of filling, weighing, sealing, then boxing the individual packets. SCV veterans organizations will be in charge of distributing the packages to the valley’s veterans.
