Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials confirmed Monday the investigation into a Canyon Country father arrested on suspicion of child abuse was forwarded to the Special Victims Bureau for the Sheriff’s Department.
Detectives said a case would be presented as a result of the injury, but investigators did not believe the child was hurt intentionally, according to an email Monday from the sergeant in charge of the SVB.
“The Special Victims Bureau is investigating the circumstances surrounding the suspect accidentally discharging a pellet gun (and) shooting his son in the leg,” according to an email Monday from Sgt. Joseph Mesa. The address of the incident matched the suspect’s residence on Manzanita Lane.
Officials did not release any additional information about the incident, but Mesa’s email indicated there would be a report filed to prosecutors: “The incident appears accidental, but the case will be presented to the DA’s office.”
The suspect, a 31-year-old landscaper, was arrested on suspicion of child abuse with the possibility of great bodily injury or death Sunday afternoon. LASD records indicated he was still being held at the SCV Sheriff’s Station jail as of this story’s publication, with a Tuesday court date listed in San Fernando.
