The College of the Canyons football field transformed into the biggest stage for local and out-of-town marching bands earlier this month for the 41st annual Hart Rampage.
Hosted by the William S. Hart High School Hart Regiment band and colorguard, the event saw over 5,000 attendees and over 30 schools from across Los Angeles County competing.
Local schools that participated during the daylong competition were Valencia High School, Golden Valley High School, Saugus High School, West Ranch High School and Canyon High School.
The local tradition allows the community to come together for one night and “have a live music event that brings in schools from all over Southern California,” and “showcase what all these kids are doing,” said Anthony Bailey, Hart High’s instrumental music and band director.
The competition also gives student musicians “the recognition they deserve,” he said. “For a lot of these kids, this is kind of like their culminating event, because a lot of these schools that we get are from L.A. and they won’t necessarily go on to championships or have the opportunity to do that.”
The results for the local schools are as follows:
• Division 2A: Valencia High School, First Place Band, First Place Auxiliary, First Place Percussion.
• Division 3A: Canyon High School, Second Place Band, Second Place Auxiliary, Second Place Percussion.
• Division 4A: Saugus High School, First Place Band, First Place Auxiliary, First Place Percussion.
• Division 5A: West Ranch High School, Sweepstakes Band, Sweepstakes Auxiliary, Second Place Percussion; Golden Valley High School, Third Place Band, Second Place Auxiliary, Third Place Percussion.
Hart, as the host band, competed for a score only and did not accept awards. Hart had the highest scores of the night for both band and auxiliary.
