News release
The Canyon Coyotes 4-H club presents an award each year to the senior whom the
members believe has contributed the most to the club.
The Chris Carroll Award is named after Chris Carroll, who always helped people in trouble, said a news release from the club. He was always around to help
whenever he was available, and he was always there to step in whenever people
needed something done, the release said.
The award is presented annually to a senior member of the Canyon Coyotes who is in good standing with the club and is an individual who genuinely cares about the safety and success of their fellow members, is always willing to serve where needed without thought of reward or recognition, and conducts themselves with humility and maturity in all situations, the release said.
For the second time in club history, it was a tie: Michael Chourbagi and Evelett
Sparks tied for the Chris Carroll Award.
“I was extremely surprised, honored, and grateful to receive this award. I was very close to crying when the things that the people said about me were read,” said Sparks after she had won the award, according to the release.
Chourbagi is 16 years old and is the club treasurer. Sparks is also 16 and is the club
reporter.
Shirley Byrne, a Canyon Coyotes leader, said in the release that Carroll was a dedicated member of the Canyon Coyotes 4-H Club from 1994 to 2001. He enjoyed participating in multiple livestock projects, including sheep, swine and beef. He served as club president during the 1999-2000 4-H year.
“Chris had a gift for helping others. Throughout his years with the Coyotes, leaders and members alike learned that they could always depend on Chris to lend a helping hand. Chris was always there, no matter what,” Byrne said in the release. “And, he never sought recognition for all that he did.”
On July 2, 2012, Carroll, a member of the U.S. Forest Service, died after being involved in an accident on his way to a fire. “The Canyon Coyotes lost a great friend that day, but we continue to honor his memory with the Chris Carroll Award,” the release said.
