Question: Hi, Robert. I’m a first-time homeowner, slightly handy but determined to learn and do as much on my own as I can. With that in mind, I have a quick question for you. Could you tell me what the problem could be, when suddenly the handle to my toilet doesn’t operate the flushing? It was working and then it wasn’t, but I’ve never worked on a toilet before so I’m not sure where to begin. I can move the handle, but it is loose and nothing happens. Can you help direct me on what to do, please?

Answer: Caleb, congratulations on your first home, and good for you, wanting to learn and do repairs on your own. This should be an easy one: First turn the water to the toilet off via the angle stop that is against the wall, behind the toilet.

Lift the lid from the tank, you’ll see a handle mechanism, and it is likely broken. This mechanism needs to be replaced, so find a like-for-like replacement at a big box store.

Be sure you purchase the same mounting style; for instance, front or side mount. Use an adjustable wrench to remove the old and replace the new. There will be instructions on the box, showing you how to adjust the arm, so that the flush is sufficient. This should do the trick for you. Best of luck.
