Traffic briefly stopped along a major Santa Clarita roadway on Tuesday after a family of geese attempted to cross all six lanes, prompting a bystander to step in and guide them to safety.

The scene unfolded in the 24000 block of Newhall Ranch Road, east of McBean Parkway, where seven goslings and their two parents were spotted making their way across the busy thoroughfare. Drivers were forced to slow and stop as the feathered family created a traffic backup while navigating the wide stretch of roadway.

A bystander, who had been caught in the resulting traffic, exited his vehicle and helped escort the geese across the lanes, ensuring the family avoided danger.

The area is well-known for frequent duck and goose crossings, as the feathered visitors travel between the lake in the Bridgeport community and the pond in the shopping center at McBean and Newhall Ranch.

In the end — much like the age-old question about the chicken — the family of nine successfully made it to the other side of the road, safely waddling along on webbed feet as traffic resumed normal flow.
