News release

Heroes of Color, a creative enrichment program focused on empowering young artists through business and storytelling, is launching the Santa Clarita Creative Workforce Incubator in close partnership with College of the Canyons, the organization announced in a news release.

This educational collaboration, which delivers career training to students, is presented by the city of Santa Clarita, the release said.

This partnership marks the launch of a broader vision to build a sustainable creative workforce pipeline for students and emerging artists in the region, the release said.

“This partnership with College of the Canyons is bigger than just a program; it’s a signal that creativity and culture are an integral part of our communities,” David Heredia, founder of Heroes of Color, said in the release. “We’re not just teaching art. We’re building pathways for students to turn their creativity into long-term careers.”

The 10-week program equips students with real-world skills in freelancing, personal branding, and client acquisition, the release said.

The curriculum culminates in a public PitchFest, where students present their work for feedback and potential freelance opportunities — including projects connected to city initiatives. A panel of three judges, including Councilman Bill Miranda and local patrons of the arts, will award cash prizes to the top three candidates, the release said.

The Pitchfest is scheduled 1-4 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, in Hasley Hall, Cinema, Room 101, on the Valencia campus of College of the Canyons, 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road.

“For artists looking to work in the current economic environment and to learn how to brand themselves and market their talents, the Workforce Incubator provides valuable learning experiences for College of the Canyons students in animation, art, and music programs,” Jeff Baker, chair of the COC Media Entertainment and Arts Department, said in the release. “We’re proud to support a program that uplifts student voices and prepares them for the future.”

Community members, educators and organizations are invited to attend upcoming events and learn more about how to get involved. To learn more, partner, or attend an event, visit www.heroesofcolor.com or contact [email protected]
