News release
Attorney, small business owner and Santa Clarita community member Larry Grable has announced his candidacy for the Saugus Union School District board of education, Trustee Area 1.
“Larry Grable has the experience, judgment and commitment to public service that our students and families deserve,” Rep. George Whitesides, D-Agua Dulce, said of his endorsement in a news release from the Grable campaign. “He understands that great schools are built by supporting students, educators, staff and parents, and I know he will bring a thoughtful, collaborative approach to the board.”
“Good schools don’t happen by accident,” Grable said in the release. “They are the result of good teachers, involved parents, strong leadership, sound financial decisions, and a community that stays focused on students. Saugus has excellent schools. Our responsibility is to protect what works, identify where we can do better, and make sure every dollar and every decision moves our students forward.”
Grable’s priorities include strong academic performance, safe and orderly classrooms, responsible stewardship of district finances, support for teachers and staff, and meaningful parent involvement, the release said.
Grable also believes school safety involves more than locked doors and security procedures, the release said.
“Academic achievement and student well-being aren’t competing priorities,” Grable said. “A child who feels safe, supported, accountable for their behavior, and ready to learn has a better opportunity to succeed. We should use approaches that work, measure the results, and keep our focus on creating classrooms where teachers can teach and children can learn.”
Parents, Grable said, must be an important part of that equation.
For more than 25 years, Grable has worked as an attorney advising inventors, entrepreneurs, and businesses and litigating complex disputes, the release said.
Raised in a blue-collar family, he earned a degree in biology from Northeastern State University and a law degree from The University of Tulsa, becoming the first attorney in his family, the release said.
His father was a Teamster and union steward at UPS, while his grandfather and stepfather were electricians. Those experiences shaped Grable’s belief that schools should prepare students for many different paths to success, the release said.
Larry and his wife, Christy, chose Santa Clarita in large part because of its schools. Their daughter graduated from UCLA, and their son attends California State University, Northridge.
“Success after school doesn’t look the same for every student,” Grable added. “For one child it may be a four-year university. For another it may be military service, an apprenticeship, a skilled trade, or eventually starting a business. Our job in elementary education is to give every one of them the academic foundation, confidence, discipline, and opportunity to pursue that future.”
