News release
Representatives from more than 50 organizations and businesses in the Santa Clarita Valley gathered Oct. 15, at the Hyatt Regency Valencia to learn more about California Assembly Bill 1572, the state law governing the watering of non-functional turf.
The SCV Water Agency, in partnership with the California Water Efficiency Partnership, hosted the free workshop for public agencies, homeowners’ associations, and commercial, industrial, and institutional properties impacted by AB 1572.
AB 1572 became law on Jan. 1, 2024, and prohibits the use of potable water for the irrigation of non-functional turf – mowed, decorative grass that is not used for human recreation.
Non-functional turf is commonly found between sidewalks and streets, in medians and parking lots, in front of businesses and shopping centers, and in decorative areas maintained by schools and HOAs.
State and local government agencies must cease irrigating non-functional turf with potable water by Jan. 1, 2027, followed by CII properties in 2028, and HOA common areas and mobile home parks in 2029. AB 1572 does not apply to residential customers.
Workshop attendees heard from SCV Water and CalWEP representatives to understand how AB 1572 will impact their organization and received information on SCV Water’s resources and available programs to support compliance and general water use efficiency efforts.
