In the past four years, the Kiwanis Club of Santa Clarita has honored senior Key Club members for their outstanding service to the community. This year we were proud to award Rebecca Lee from Valencia High School, Alyssa Yim from Saugus High School, Martin Yerovi from Hart High School, Rachel Lee from West Ranch High School, Robin Allas from Golden Valley High School, and Kyle Smith from Canyon High School.
Key Club is a high school community service club. The Kiwanis Club of Santa Clarita sponsors Key Clubs in six high schools in the Santa Clarita Valley. These students provide thousands of hours of service a year to their local, state and international communities. Many served as officers or as board members within Key Club in addition to their volunteer work. Coordinating projects with the Boys and Girls Clubs, campus beautification, tutoring younger students, helping at Henry Mayo Hospital, building houses in Tijuana, or being a driver for Safe Rides are some of the ways our students volunteered their time. To these six students, however, it is not the amount of time they volunteer but the purpose and fulfillment they feel from giving back to their community.
This sentiment was well stated in the recipients’ essays. Martin Yerovi stated, “Serving the community means not just being another face only getting service hours but helping it grow, seeing and appreciating all the different roles people play in it, and joining together with others to make a difference.” Others such as Rebecca Lee felt that service to their community helps a person grow and gives them a sense of humility.
All our recipients this year are an inspiration and have bright futures ahead of them. Congratulations!
