The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday enacted a series of regulations to increase pedestrian safety and smooth traffic flow around Stevenson Ranch Elementary School.
The moves – which focus on parking, stopping and turning rules along Faulkner Drive and Carroll Lane – grew out of brainstorming last year between school officials, parents and the Sheriff’s Department, said Chad Rose, the school’s principal.
Rose said the recommendations eventually presented to the Board of Supervisors were proactive, rather than a reaction to any dangerous incident that occurred around the K-6 school.
“We just had concerns about the number of vehicles stacked up on the street, and we were looking for ways to minimize people crossing each other’s paths,” Rose said.
“We are hoping to make things safer and smoother.”
Specifically, the new regulations – affecting school days only — call for:
* Increasing the “no parking” hours along the north side of Faulkner Drive, east of Carroll Lane and west of Lewis Way. The new rules call for parking prohibitions between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., and again between 12 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
* Establishing a school passenger loading zone on the east side of Carroll Lane, north of Faulkner Drive, in front of the school, between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
* Prohibiting left turns from the parking lot on the west side of Carroll Lane, across from the school, between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. and between 12 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
* Prohibiting left turns into the same parking lot from Carroll Lane between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. and again between 12 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
* Rescinding the 20-minute parking limit on the west side of Carroll Lane, north of Faulkner Drive.
* Rescinding the parking ban on the east side of Carroll Lane, both south and north of Clifton Place, near the school.
* Rescinding the 20-minute parking limit on the south side of Faulkner Drive going east, between Carroll Lane and Thurber Way.
The supervisors passed the changes by a 5-0 vote. A spokesman for the Department of Public Works said it will take 60-90 days for new signs to be posted and for the new rules to take effect.
