When you’re in the mood for soulful R&B and Pop music, you can’t go wrong with local 19-year old artist, Nathan Lindsay’s album “Your Tale Is Behind You.”
Born in Texas, Lindsay moved to Santa Clarita and studied at Saugus High School before he moved to a private school, Dunn, to further his education in the arts.
When he returned to Santa Clarita he met Randal Yamamoto, a producer willing to release Lindsay’s debut album “Your Tale Is Behind You.”
Currently, Lindsay is gigging around Santa Clarita and plans to launch his next album early December.
In an interview with Nathan Lindsey, I had the privilege of finding out that Nathan Lindsay feels that his life is truly musical and is more grateful than ever to share it with the place he grew up, Santa Clarita.

nathan_lindsay_promo_image_2_3_webQ: When did you first start singing?
A: “I have been singing since I was  6 years old. My friends and I- we used to do karaoke. I used to do musical theatre and  that’s when my teacher recommended to keep going and pursuing singing.”

Q: What motivates you to sing?
A: Music is the only thing that makes sense, all I want to do is sing, and I feel like have this power and energy, and my life’s purpose to feel this energy and connect it with other people.

Q: What was the first song you ever sang?
A: The first original I ever wrote? I’m not sure what I named it, but I think it was called ‘Looked At Me.’ I was seven years old and I wrote the song about a girl in one of my classes. It felt awesome when I wrote it. It  was a great feeling when I came up with something that people encouraged me to keep doing.

Q: What did your family do to encourage you?
A: I’m really lucky, My family is truly great. I was raised to do what made me happy and be a good person. My family connects to the joy I feel, and it’s just a beautiful thing and it’s the best form of encouragement I could get – people just being happy with me.

Q: Who are your musical inspirations?
A: My biggest musical inspiration ever is the Grateful Dead. Their music to me is life-changing, they are my favorite band. My favorite solo artist is Washed Out. The music inspires me on this journey of myself. It was the first concert I ever went to. During the concert, I looked over at my uncle and told him that I would be the guy up on the stage one day connecting with everyone. Their lyrics really inspire me in my everyday life.

Q: What kind of music do you listen to today?
A: Today I listen to everything. Depending on how I am feeling, I listen to that. I like jam bands a lot, bands like Moe. I like listening to Washed Out. I’m always discovering new artists.

Q: What embarrassing songs might I find on your MP3 player?
A: You would find tons of Jonas Brothers songs. I just thought they were so awesome, I was obsessed with them when I was younger. I just listened to them the other day, and I still think they are pretty good. I think they rock, to be honest.

Q: What does your current album represent and what significance does it have in your life?
A: The album to me is this impactful journey of who I am, who I was, and who I am trying to become. It’s just about the journeys of life. Everyone is experiencing different struggles and passions, and no one can say they are the only one struggling. My music is there to tell them they aren’t alone. My main goal is to motivate people, stand up for them, and connect with them- bring others out of what they might be going through.

Q: If you weren’t singing, what would you be doing?
A: I would be doing acting. I used to do a lot of musical theater. Through high school I was in all the plays; I took a lot of acting, singing, and dancing classes. Acting served one side of me, while music served another. But in the last minute – I decided to pursue music even though I may have been better at acting. As long as I’m able to sing my own songs and perform them, that’s all that matters to me.

Q: If you could dabble in another genre of music, what would it be?
A: I would go into Jam music. I kind of want to go into that at some point. Right now the goal is to connect with others. One day, I would really like to explore that genre.

Q: What hidden talents do you have?
A: I did magic for about four years and got super intense with it. I trained with the magician from the Magic Castle. I also dance and sing. But I feel like my talent is writing. I feel like I’m a writer- before I sing, I write my songs that allow me to try to connect with everyone.

Q: What is your favorite song, singer, and album?
A: My favorite song right now is called “Hell In A bucket” by the Grateful Dead. My favorite album of all time is “Paracosm” by Washed Out. That album changed my life. This album just changed my world, my perspective – visually, too as I saw the world in a different way. I am forever grateful to the artist because I think it’s the most powerful music I have ever listened to.
