Firehouse Subs in Valencia and Simi Valley are raising money to support the Santa Clarita family of Ryan Osler, a Ventura County firefighter who lost his life in a rollover crash Sept 21.

The two locations pledged to give 30 percent of their total daily sales on Tuesday to the Osler family.

Osler was a 38-year-old fire engineer who worked out of Station No. 42 in Moorpark.  He was with the fire department for 18 years, lived in Santa Clarita and is survived by his wife and two children.

Jennifer Press, owner of Firehouse Subs in Valencia, said she was contacted by the owner of Firehouse Subs in Simi Valley to host a joint fundraiser for the Osler family.  The same day, a former teacher of the Osler family reached out to Press requesting the same thing.

“The family meant a lot to the couple [the teacher and her partner] and they were compelled to do something,” Press said.  “They were responsible for getting the word out and marketing and canvasing the area.”

Press said the teacher, who requested to remain anonymous, was the one who informed the communities about the upcoming fundraiser.

“Without her and the work she did, it would not have been that successful,” she said.

By 5 p.m. Tuesday, Press considered the fundraiser a success.  During peak points of the day, the Valencia location had a line out the door for two hours.  Press said this line began to form again around dinnertime.

Firehouse Subs in Valencia also put empty boots on display throughout the store for customers to donate additional funds to the Osler family, following a suggestion from a customer.

“At last count it was at $1,000 at people who donated whole heartedly.  I saw some people put $100 bills in there,” Press said.

Press said that people from all over the community and all walks of life visited the location today to pay tribute to the fallen firefighter and help his family.

“As always, this community comes together in times of need,” Press said.
