How Santa Clarita Council might dish your dollars

Santa Clarita City Hall

The Santa Clarita City Council will meet next Tuesday at 6 p.m. at City Hall, with a couple of six- and seven-figure expenditure items on the agenda.

Among them:

$651,000 — to purchase, from L.A. County, about 26 acres adjacent to the Via Princessa Metrolink station for “new potential open space/active parkland in Canyon Country,’’ according to the council’s agenda report. The money would come from the Open Space Preservation District Fund Balance.

According to the agenda report, the land was originally part of the old Highway 126 alignment and State Route 14 improvements, and the county obtained it from Newhall Land & Farming Co.

The county has offered to sell the land to the city at the appraised $651,000 value.

$100,000 — to increase the budget on the existing contract with Sparta Builders for “as needed” general-contractor services on city-owned buildings and facilities.

A $450,000 contract with Sparta had already been approved in February 2014, running through January February 2017.

But, according to the council’s agenda report, the Sand Fire caused the city to spend $239,891 of “as needed” funds to repair 5,300 feet of pole fencing on the Robinson Ranch trail, plus various trail gradings, drainage-duct installations, tree removals and hazardous-material disposals.

The city had already dipped into the “as needed” fund for $205,195, leaving just $4,914 in the fund till the Sparta contract expires.

The addition $100,000, “will allow for continued use of the service for immediate repairs and maintenance through the remainder of the contract,’’ the agenda report said.

$1,320,000 – on a one-year contract with Stay Green, Inc., for tree maintenance around the city.

$290,880 – to award a new two-year contract to Stay Green for landscape maintenance in the Golden Valley Ranch area.

* $390,398 – to renew, for one year, a contract with Stay Green for landscape maintenance in the Valencia Summit area.
