The Santa Clarita Valley Business Group recently sponsored its 3rd Annual “Speech Week” Competition for participating 8th grade students from throughout the William S. Hart School District.  The topic of the competition, “What Is the Value of Possessing Good Character?’ was thoughtfully addressed by over 60 students, beginning with each schools preliminary rounds.  Semi-final rounds were subsequently held on November 2nd, 3rd, and 4th at host schools Placerita, La Mesa, and Rio Norte, respectively. The students were given three minutes to present their speeches and were scored by 8-judge panels comprised of business members of the SCVBG.  During each of the three semi-final rounds, the top two students from each junior high school were selected to advance the Championship Round on November 10th, hosted by Rancho Pico Junior High.

The speeches given by the 11 finalists were scored by the Executive Board of the SCVBG, who enjoyed with the students and their friends and families, a wonderful chocolate fountain with a spread of treats. In the final scoring, the top three presenters were Emma Del Rio, Arroyo Seco; Isabella Eng, Arroyo Seco; and Nicole Agusta, Rancho Pico, in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, respectively.

While all participating students in the competition were provided a certificate reflecting their achievement, the top overall students (named above) received cash awards and were invited to present their speeches on Friday, November 18 at a meeting of the entire SCVBG membership at the Tournament Players Club in Valencia. Given the exceptional poise and confidence exhibited by Emma, Isabella, and Nicole, during their speeches, the SCVBG members gave each rousing applause.

The SCVBG is the largest professional networking group (75 business owners) in the Santa Clarita Valley and was established in 2002.  Recognizing the importance of being a solid partner in the community, the SCVBG began the “Speech Week” Competition in partnership with the Hart District to support high academic standards and opportunities for achievement for all students.  The SCVBG is especially grateful to the Hart District junior high schools, their Principals and staffs for their gracious support and commitment to this annual event.
