With the help of a student art exhibit, the city of Santa Clarita is encouraging its residents end unsafe and distracted driving.
The “Drive Focus Live” art exhibit, located on the First Floor Gallery in City Hall, features artwork from local students in kindergarten to 12th grade about the dangers of unsafe and distracted driving.
“With the student art what we wanted to do was share our ‘Drive Focus Live’ message with young students and we wanted students to share their own views on why this is important,” said Mayumi Miyasato, communications specialist for the city of Santa Clarita.
Representatives from the city reached out to local schools and PTAs to encourage students to share and submit their artwork. In total, the city received about 20 entries from students of all ages, according to Miyasato.
“We have 14 pieces on display right now and they’re great because they show the perspective of the child and it helps the person behind the wheel think twice,” she said.
With the exhibit the city hopes to draw attention to the issue, reduce the number of traffic collisions and educate children on safe driving.
“Driving safe is something everyone wants to do, but it’s something that we need to keep remembering,” Miyasato said. “It’s easy to get distracted today with smartphones.”
Other unsafe driving practices include speeding, failing to yield, driving while fatigued, among others.
“It’s about thinking twice when you are behind the wheel,” Miyasato said.
The city is also encouraging its residents to take a safe driving pledge to help reduce accidents and educate the community.
“It’s not just parents it’s also for students,” Miyasato said. “It’s a great way to review safety tips for everyone on the road.”
