A man who sheriff’s officials said “admitted trying to kill himself” suffered only minor injuries Tuesday night when he ran into rush-hour traffic and was struck by an SUV on busy Railroad Avenue near Drayton Street in Saugus.

The man, whose identity was not immediately known, was being treated at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, and then was headed to the hospital’s mental-health unit under a 72-hour hold, said Lt. Rob Hahnlein of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s station.

Hahnlein said the man told deputies at the scene that he had tried to kill himself.

But, Hahnlein said, the man only “glanced” off the SUV, which suffered no damage.

The incident happened around 5:30 p.m.

The man was transported by the county Fire Department to Henry Mayo.

A fire dispatcher said the man was originally in front of the nearby Saugus Café when he started running in and out of traffic.
